On the left of the page you’ll see a menu with all the options of things you can do.  At the very top is block called Posts.  Click on the down arrow and you’ll get several more options: Edit, Add New, Post Tags, and Categories.  Click on Add New.

Now, a new page should open up that says Add New Post at the top.  The first thing you should do is add your title – you can change it later if you want to.  Write your post in the big area below.

Before you publish it you should assign it to a Category so that all your posts are not in Uncategorized Category.  This will make it easier for people to find things in your Blogs.  The Categories section is to your right, and third from the top.  You’ll need to click on the +Add New Category link at the bottom of the Categories section if this is your first post.  Choose something that will define the topic of your post but is fairly general.  You’ll notice that this blog has two categories so far – Life Blogs Network, where I can talk about other blogs that are in the network, and How-To’s, where I can add posts like this one that tell you how to do things.  Once you have some categories already added you’ll just have to check off the category that you’re blog is in.

Wait though – not quite done yet.  You should add some tags.  Tags are little snippets of words that tell the search engines what your post is about.  For instance, in this post I might add, add a post, WP how to, categories – because those are things that people are likely to search for if they want to find info that I’ve just talked about here.

There are lots of other things you can do but we’ll get into that more later.  Meanwhile, you’ve just added your first post!  Now click Publish and you’re done!

Want to see what you’ve done?  Click on the Preview Changes button at the top right.

Type into your browser:

This will bring you to the log in page.  Just put in your username and password and you’re in!

You might notice that the site Debra Stockwell – Marriage Commissioner, is on it’s own domain, not the life-blogs.com domain.  That is because Debra opted to have her own domain so that she would be easier to find.  I also suggested using her name as her brand because if people were to search for her they would put her name into the search engines and her site would be likely to come up first.  She didn’t know how to buy a domain though and since I already have an account I bought it for her for under $9.  If this is an option you’d like to consider your only cost would be for the domain.  I host all the blog/sites I build on my own hosting.

She also has articles on her website about wedding related topics.  The articles on her site are free and able to be used by anyone.  If you want to use articles like these on your site I can show you how to do that.  Unique articles are better though and I can provide you with unique articles for your blog at an extra cost.

Her site is business focused so we’ve chosen to go with a main page that introduces her service/product and then a blog, where she can talk about news items that are relevant to her business, what’s happening as she develops it, specials, and so on.  She also will have multiple pages in the top tabs that feature specific kinds of products like skin care, household products, weight loss, etc.

In the side bar she has two advertising tabs so she can feature specific products and change them as she wants to.

The theme I chose for this site is focused on interaction.  I want people to comment, leave their thoughts, share ideas, and so on.  The video option lets me add a video in a post but the most recent video will always remain at the top so that people can see it right away.

I love the theme on this blog – it is one of my new favorites.  It has some really great options and it is available for free so if you like it you would be able to choose this theme for your blog.
